Common Welding Terms
Welding
A joining process producing coalescence of materials by heating them to the welding temperature, with or without the application of pressure or by the application of pressure or by the application of pressure alone, and with or without the use of filler metal.
SMAW
An arc welding process with an arc between a covered electrode and the weld pool. The process is used with shielding from the decomposition of the electrode covering, without the application of pressure, and with filler metal from the electrode.
GMAW
An arc welding process using an arc between a continuous filler metal electrode and the weld pool. The process is used with shielding from an externally supplied gas and without the application of pressure.
FCAW
An arc welding process that uses an arc between a continuous filler metal electrode and the weld pool. The process is used with shielding gas from a flux contained within the tubular electrode, with or without additional shielding from an externally supplied gas, and without the application of pressure.
GTAW
An arc welding process using an arc between a tungsten electrode (non-consumable) and the weld pool. The process is used with shielding gas and without the application of pressure. The GTAW process is also referred to as TIG welding.
Grinding
The third step of the preparation process for metallographic specimens. Grinding a specimen removes surface layers that were damaged from the sectioning process. This is performed, manually or mechanically, by rubbing the specimen with special abrasive paper. This process is repeated numerous times, using abrasive papers of increasing fineness.
